NOTWITHSTANDING

A student asked me about the use of NOTWITHSTANDING. This long and difficult word can be used like "in spite of", like "however", like "although" or like "though". Any way, don't forget that it is very formal:

  • Notwithstanding their objections the plan was finally carried out. (= in spite of")
  • The plan was finally carried out, notwithstanding. (= though)
  • Notwithstanding they objected strongly, the plan was carried out. (=although)
  • Notwithstanding, the plan was carried out. (= however)

I hope you will find it helpful.
